    TDS Example v2.0

Post by MasterOfKings on Sun May 23, 2010 3:07 am

    TDS Example v2.0
A simple TDS which includes Laser, 5 weapon types, attributes of weapons, health and ammo pick-ups, basic HUD features, minimap radar, and basic enemy A.I Line of Sight system

    Compatibility: GM8 Pro or Lite
    Tutorial Type: Example
    Downloadable Content: Pro or Lite
    Skill Level: Beginner
Objective: Learn the basics of making a TDS
    Category: General GML

This is the updated version of my first example...
I do not require credit for using this example but I would like to be told that you are using it in your game...

This is a simple Topdown Shooter example that gives the basics on shooting, weapon attributes, reloading, health and ammo pickups, minimap radar usage, moving, A.I Line of Sight (LoS), and laser sighting...

v2.1 Pro and v2.1 Lite are upcoming examples... v2.1 will include all features in v2.0, but the basic enemy A.I will be extended so it can move around, patrol and fight you.

Please post any bugs that will be fixed, and/or recommendations what you would like to see in v2.1 (or more specifically, v3)...
Also, please post if you thought this was a good/bad example, and what made it good/bad, and what might need improving...

Please comment if you download it!

The only problem I can find is that when you go near a wall and rotate towards it, the character gets stuck.
Nice laser system by the way.

Yeah, this example is pretty old now. v2 started months ago, but never got around to making the A.I, and still haven't.

    Glad you liked the laser!

Post by pyranight on Tue May 25, 2010 1:25 am

will there be a V2 realeased? because after distruction i was thinking of making a TDS, (like in the intro topic ramses sayis about Lockdown) i was going to make that again and a nice engine would be good this time rather than my dodgy drag and drop when i was making Lockdown lol HAHAHA

In my opinion, making your own engine (even if it is not a perfect one from an advanced point of view) is much better than using other engines. That's because if you know how to make an engine, you will be able to figure out anything related to it, and develop it whenever you want.

But it is very good to look how better engines are made and learn from them.

Not for awhile as I have a lot of other commitments on right now, so finishing v2 isn't a priority; I'll try and get a date soon.

    A date? Very Happy

As a suggestion for a later version, you should try making some different movement engines, like rotating with the keyboard, or rotating depending on the mouse movement rather than the angle between the mouse and the object. I mean, like if the mouse moves left the direction value grows and if the mouse moves right the direction value shrinks.

I think I'll put this project on hold until Mechanical Warfare is done.
